Maurice,

Go to the local sporting goods store and get some fishing leader that is as 
close as you can to the original dial string. That will work fine.

AES also sells replacement dial string, but fishing line/leader works fine.

Make sure you have instructions on how to re-string the thing.. Some radios 
are complicated in the way the string winds around.
