Greetings friends. Some time ago I posted a desire to purchase a lock knob for my SX-42. Somehow the previous owner lost it or perhaps the threads within it stripped. A Canadian Ham in Toronto emailed me stating that he could design and fabricate one for me. I must admit that I'm a purist when it comes to having original parts on my Hallicrafters radios, but the very fact that the knobs are hard to find made me consider this mans request. His name is Mr. Tom Harrison (retired) from Toronto, Canada. Tom worked for the Rogers Majestic Radio Co. in Toronto where he purchased his Hallicrafters SX-42. Yes, you read that correctly. Rogers imported and sold the Hallicrafters radios in Canada. Tom told me that Hallicrafters would send the radios to Rogers and they in turn would remove the Halli power transformer which was 60 cycles and replace it with a 25 cycle one, as electricity in Ontario was 25 cycles at that time. Tom has a deep love for radios and a lot of other things too. One of those other things is being a machinist. I agreed to have Tom make me a lock knob. Today it arrived in the mail. I rushed home to install it in my radio. Wow, this knob is not like the Halli knob, truth is, it is much nicer looking and I would think it would last a lot longer because of its brass construction. The original Halli knob was notorious for having stripped threads and damaging the tuning shaft. I could not help but to go upstairs and take a peek at it every now and then. It is a work of art. To say that Tom is a gifted machinist would be an understatement. His work is flawless. I could not thank him enough. I wanted to tell everyone about Toms talent as I know there are others out there in the same boat as me. Take my word for it, you will not be disappointed. If you were not happy with the brass you could spray paint it silver, but I'm going to leave mine exactly like Tom made it. If you are interested in having Tom build you one of these, please contact him at his email address: harrison at axxent.ca
