Phil,
Unless this set is only single conversion for BCB, I would give those coils a
good hard squint. Do not ignore the cold solder joint possibility either.
I think you tested the tubes already. If not, you might try a few substitutions
to see if sensitivity improves.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Poor BCB sensitivty on SX-71

Hello
Now that the SX-71 is in full use I've noticed that the sensitivity on the
BCB seems to be very poor, especially compared to the otehr bands. (The
Realistic DX-160 is FAR more sensitive on this band) The local stations come
in well but it just doesn't seem to have the gumption I would expect of a
set with an RF amplifier and 3 IF amplifiers!
When I went through the alignment of the set all trimmers seemed to work
well and smoothly and not have to be cranked down tight or loosened up
excessively. That would lead me to believe the coils are pretty much the
correct inductance! (The BCB antenna coil windings are black rather than
the tan color of the other coils, I assumed this was a coating) On the
generator I noticed the sensitivity was much better on bands 2-5 also but at
the time of the alignment thought it might be normal (many riceboxes
"desense" the BCB band).
What think ye, a bad coil or is this set 'usually' much weaker on the BCB.
