The SX-71 features a big, true boatanchor grade front panel, yet isn't
quite as deep as the SX-42's, RA-17's, SP-600's etc., so you may actually
be able to lean an elbow on that bench, maybe even a logbook.
And the SX-71, just a year short of 50, is hardly broken in, yet still
compatible with all of the important software (that comes in over the
airwaves). Consider all the advanced features ...
Not one, but two sliderule dials -- contribute no noise like
digital-smigital boxes. Not to mention a more user-friendly, intuitive,
proportional interface. And no subliminal flicker from digital displays
which are known to cause brain anomalies, migraine, neuritis, neuralgia,
seizures, nausea, apoplexy, and diminished cerebral function.
Genuine gear & pully tuning components -- none of those phony tuning
knobs that are really just generating pulses. Real meter, not some
virtual, pixelated representation thereof.
Radical thermionic emission, plugin devices, with hard-wired discrete
components, all readily available at reasonable prices, replace those
pesky LSI chip, cheap surface mount components which can only be
wave-soldered or possibly even glued in place -- if you can find
replacements.
Flip top, no tools case -- way ahead of its time, all standard.
Precision, infinitely adjustable rotary analog controls - proven superior
in man-machine interfaces.
High-tech air variable tuning capacitors -- the dielectric is constantly
replenished and -- free! None of that synthetic junk or phase locked
loops to get out of phase or loopy.
No ROM or EEPROM chips to worry about losing their logic or being out of
date. No need for microprocessors either. ( A radio that needs a whole
computer of its own to make it work? Nah! Must be 'cause it's missing
some parts.) SX-71's come hard-programmed.
Well matched components and useful controls eliminate the need for
annoying and costly DSP addons. If you must, rest assured, the
forward-thinking engineers at Hallicrafters made your radio
PC-compatible, so just plug the output into the input of your sound card
and download some DSP software. Those Halli guys were way ahead of the
curve. The DSP software will burden the PC sufficiently so it won't be
able to stream any of those so-called Internet broadcasts.
Finally, the very latest in styling. Only the newest, cutting edge PC
equipment has come out in silver 'n black, rediscovering the word
"snazzy". Heck -- the SX-71 has the others beat even before you turn it
on. Of course, now you'll need a @RARE@ white dial model for the other
end of the bench.
