Hi
Here are the favorites among my present radio collection and why I like
them, listed in order of "actual use time". Some Vintage and some 'not' so
vintage.
1. Realistic DX-160 solid state analog (1978). This general coverage
receiver tunes longwave and 530kHz to 30MHz. It is tied into my 12 Volt
Station battery and is NEVER turned off, I just turn the volume down when
not using it. It is fairly selective, quite sensitive, runs cool and is
very power efficient. It does have a little temperature drift on SSB, which
is why it's left on continiously. I 'normally' use this set to listen to
BBC and R Australia in the mornings, often rush Limbaugh during the day and
"When Radio Was" on KSL at night.
2. Hallicrafters 5R10A 5 tube AC/DC (1953). I often use this set for "Talk
Radio" during the day because of it's very crisp audio through it's internal
speaker. I don't do a lot of DXing with this set, but do occasionally
listen to the BBC or HCJB on it.
3. RadioShack DX-398 (Sangean ATS-909) (2002). If I want to look for a
specific station on a specific frequency I may use this set as it's "punch
in the frequency and go". It doesn't get a lot of routine listening time
because of it's "puny" audio. Otherwise a good performer.
4. Rycom 3131 FSV (Frequency Selective Voltmeter) (1968). This isn't
really a receiver but rather a test instrument that tunes from 9kHz to
1600kHz, has a 250Hz bandwidth filter with extremely steep skirts. An
analog set it is dial readable to 1kHz and is exceptionally fine for
longwave beacon chasing.
5. Hallicrafters SX-71 13 tube analog (1953). This set is listed last ONLY
because it is still under "re-construction" and is spending it's time on the
workbench getting a COMPLETE overhaul. BUT, after using it some (sans
cabinet) it is already obvious to me that this will soon become my favorite
radio. Great audio, great selectivity with it's Xtal filter, Good stability
and good image rejection with it's double conversion.
