Hello all
Well, I'm slowly drawing to the end of the restoration of this SX-71. I
have the lid finished, the main cabinet sanded, primed and painted flat
black. Lid was "Clear coated" today which really put the finishing touch on
it. The cabinet will be clear coated after sitting a couple days to let the
paint "cure" (that flat black really dried quickly in the sun). Front panel
will be carefully cleaned and clear coated after it arrives (I'll first test
the clearcoat on the back side of it).
Anyway. The real subject of this post is knobs with aluminium skirts. The
ones on this set are in "pretty fair" condition overall (considering what
the cabinet looked like). However, they do have light surface corrosion
spots on the skirts. The lettering appears to be pretty much intact. Any
ideas on what to do about the knobs, or do you think they are probably
better off left as is (In other words am I likely to make them worse).
Methinks that in spite of the rusty condition of the cabinet (and some
chassis corrosion) that this set may have had just a modest amount of use as
knob and panel lettering were pretty much intact. (If it weren't for the
rust bumps etc I wouldn't be replacing the front panel). One tuning knob is
very badly chipped up, but I have nice heavy weighted knobs to replace both
as I'm not overly concerned about 100% originality.
Even the pewter band switch knob is unbroken and in good condition, a
surprise considering how very stiff the bandswitch was before I worked it
over.
