The 6146 or the 6146A are fine, and, in fact, can be
"mixed" (i.e. one 6146 and one 6146A). But, the 6146B
is usually a "no no"! Never mix a 6146B with one of
the earlier tubes. The only difference between the
6146 and the 6146A is the heater ("filament")
construction.
As far as 6146W tubes go: If they have a code date of
before 1964 they are either 6146 or 6146A. However,
after early to mid 1964 (depending on the brand), the
military had the manufacturers start providing 6146B
equivalents marked as 6146W. Thus, the only way to
tell if the 6146W tubes are 6146B are by the code
dates.
The 6293 tubes also will work quite well in place of
the 6146 and 6146A. In fact, the 6293 usually last
several times as long as the 6146 or 6146A.
If you subscribe to Electric Radio, you might want to
see my article on the 6146 family of tubes in the
February 2002 issue.

I know this question has been asked before but I can't
locate my notes about this subject. My HT-32 has the
plain 6146's. My question is, will the 6146A's work
o.k.? I believe I've heard several say the 6146B's are
a no-no in this rig. How about the 6146W's? I've
located a pair of 6146A's but wanted the groups input
before I purchased them.
