W4CQ Student Earns License

One student in the W4CQ license class did not settle for "plain ol'
Technician" phone privilages. Kristen Carle, age 19, planned from the
beginning to work a digital mode that utilizes the most sophistcated signal
processing system ever devised; CW. Although most people use tapes and
computer programs to sharpen their code skills, Kristen's approach was more
direct. Taking advantage of weekly opportunities to work as a guest
operator in the club station, she logged QSOs with hams in 3 different
states. Along the way she earned the pleasant (and nowadays unusual)
distinction of having received a QSL card before getting her license. But
thats not all. Kristen went to a VE testing session in Wytheville, VA to
find out she was the youngest candidate, and actually scored the highest
out of all the people taking the element 2 and element 1 tests. Also,
unlike most people who start out using the CW mode once they get their
license and can only send at 5wpm or less, when Kristen received her call
letters in March 2006, her rate of sending could be heard at 10wpm.
