Dear members,

I was not here but some of you were and helped. I know there was use of the
K6THR repeater even though it was not quite ready. If any of you
could/would share what happened here in South County related to ham radio it
would be instructive as well as responding to this request from our Section
Manager. If you reply to me I'll send consolidate it and send to Larry and
post it back to the reflector for everyone to see as well.

   frank

Subject: EC: Request for Information

In a recent discussion with a Santa Clara county ham regarding ham response
during the 1989 earthquake, I learned of the ham's multi-day efforts as an
emergency communicator. I realized that there are a lot of hams in our
county who participated in the emergency response to that earthquake, but to
my knowledge, there is little on record regarding their experiences, nor is
that information available to those of us who were not hams at the time of
the earthquake.

I would like to start collecting narratives from all the hams in Santa Clara
County who responded to the 1989 earthquake - Where did you respond? What
did you do? How long did you work? How far did you travel? What frequencies
did you use? What would you have done differently? What do think the
"management" should have done differently? What other thoughts would you
pass on to new hams to help them prepare for the next big earthquake? What
thoughts would you like to pass on to ME as District Emergency Coordinator
for ARES? as Chief Radio Officer for RACES?

Please send your thoughts to me by email or by letter. Send email to me at
KE6AGJ at pacbell.net; send letters to me at Larry Carr, Office of Emergency
Services, County of Santa Clara, 55 W. Younger Av, Suite 435, San Jose, CA
95110-1721.

ECs and AECs, please pass this request to all the hams that you think
responded to the 1989 earthquake.

Thanks
