Hi Dave and the group,
I'll reply to the list in case others might be interested.
My wife Connie (WA6JCK) and I both have ham plates. We have just
moved back from Washington, so we are about to remove our Washington
ham plates and order California ham plates.
As you have discovered, this is a very inexpensive way to have a
distinctive license plate. The reputation of hams for public service
has earned us this official recognition -- the privilege of ham call
plates at minimal cost. I believe the $21 fee is the same as for
replacing standard plates.
Wherever I go, my ham plates identify me to other hams -- and
vice-versa. I get friendly waves and toots on the road, and
occasionally I can strike up a simplex QSO on 2 meters. I have had
some nice chats out on the highways, and others just from seeing ham
plates on other cars in parking lots. I have even had hams visiting
from other countries introduce themselves and exchange greetings.
That is rare, but when it happens, it is neat.
Go for it!
73,
Russ Dow N7DW
