This is an update to some of the changes happening here in Gilroy in the world of Amateur Radio, and I wanted to make you aware of some of the changes which will require your needed participation.
Gilroy Police Department Chief Gregg Giusiana has asked me to update the City of Gilroy RACES plan. This plan was last updated in 1987, and quite a few things have changed since that time. Under his direction, and that of Gilroy Communications Supervisor Steve Ynzunza, I am updating that plan, and will shortly be asking for assistance from amateur radio resources in the South County to renew/rebuild an active Amateur Radio component for the City of Gilroy.
First, some of the changes. Probably the largest of these changes has been the decommissioning of Communications 61 as a RACES resource. In an agreement between the Police and Fire Departments, Comm 61 was re-assigned to the Police Department, where she is in the process of being outfitted as a response vehicle for the Police Departments Hostage Negotiation Team. The vehicle is currently at the City of Gilroy Corporation Yard. New cabinets have been installed, and it has been repainted in the Police colors of white and blue. Gilroy RACES functions have been transferred from the Fire Department to the Police Department, under the direction and supervison of Gilroy Communications Supervisor Steve Ynzunza.
Second, groundbreaking will shortly begin on the new Gilroy Police Department headquarters, and Amateur Radio will have an important role in the new facility. A new ham station is part of that plan.
Third, Steve Ynzunza would like to have a cadre of communicators available to the City of Gilroy in case of emergency. Under his plan, communicators would sign up with the City under the auspices of the popular Volunteers in Policing program, and be regular members of that program, under the direction of Steve and Volunteer Coordinator Sandra Summit. A meeting will be held shortly between Sandra, Steve and myself to document how these communicators may be integrated into the VIP structure. This plan will enable the VIPs top have a viable communications resource. All South County amateur radio operations are invited to participate. A new RACES Officer for the City of Gilroy has yet to be appointed; that appointment will be made by Steve Ynzunza.
I am currently contacting officials in the Santa Clara County ARES/RACES organization to best determine their role to the City of Gilroy in the event of a disaster.
As I know more, Ill send out additional emails to the group. If you would like to participate in this project, please contact me by email.
