Hello Folks,
This weekend, we will be putting on a class primarily for some local scouts
to train them in compass reading, radio procedures, and computer practice
with TOPO, a very good mapping program available locally, and Cheap (Outdoor
World) list 49.95
We will be having the scouts and scouters use hand compasses to measure
lines of position (LOP) from N6IJ, to various easily identifiable landmarks,
such as Moss Landing Stacks, Fremont Peak, Loma Prieta, Chews Ridge, Point
Pinos, etc, and communicating by radio what they find to 'mission control'
who will be scouts and scouters, and ham ops in the shack with TOPO running.
We may even deploy the scouts far away from N6IJ to radio in LOPs from
multiple locations in order to generate FIXES. The scouts performing as
computer crews will plot the radioed-in lines of position to verify
correctness, and to work with TOPO, operationally. This gives all
participants a good experience of basic compass reading, communications
skills, and computer skills using TOPO.
This is only the first installment of a series of training sessions that
will get more sophisticated as time goes on. Because TOPO is so incredibly
good as a tool for Search and Rescue Exercises, we will integrate it and the
compass readings exercises with more sophisticated ones, using and plotting
GPS coordinates, VOR radial plotting, Fixes, from multiple VOR radials,
inverse fixes, and other exercises.
If any of you are interested in joining us, please do.. contact us first.
If you have experience in Search and Rescue, so much the better.
If you want some ready made training material in S and R, and compass
reading, go to google and use the following search terms..There are many
training notes and materials avaialable from the net:
USE:
"Compass Bearings"
"Azimuths"
"Bearings"
"Line of Position"
"Bearing Fix"
"Navigation by Compass"
Navigation + Compass
"Topo!"
QSL us, if you are interested in participating in, or repeating these
training sessions....
