Folks,

The Cal Maritime Academy Training Ship, Golden Bear,

http://hazegray.org/worldnav/usa/images/tsgb.jpg

sails again this summer to the far reaches of the South Pacific, with ham
radio aboard.
Cruise dates are: April 21 thru June 19.
Ports of Call are:
Honolulu
Suva, Fiji
Brisband Aust
Auckland, NZ
Papeete, Tahiti
Los Angles CA
Vallejo CA

This is the 3rd year for it to be involved with Cal State U Monterey Bay
At-Sea Program, created by Dr. Bob Van Spyk, KF6ZYJ. In previous years, Dr
Van Spyk, myself, and a team of students, worked together to equip the ship
with an HF Pactor II/Winlink/Sail Mail System as a teaching tool for the
CSUMB students who sailed, and took a solid academic load on board the ship.
The HF radio system was used both for email, and Voice Health and welfare
comms back to Monterey, during the 2 month cruise. Students learned about
HF radio, digital communications, PACTORII, Antenna design, Propagation
Modelling, computer networking, and of course all the other shipboard crew
disciplines, fire fighting, cooking, bilge cleaning, paint scraping, etc..
They also learned of the cultures of the countries in their listed Ports of
Call. You can be assured that all had an unforgettable, lifetime
experience, and thoroughly enjoyed their cruises. For us, Ham Radio played
a central role, as most of the CSUMB students are telecommunications majors.
It appears now, that many other universities are coming aboard the cruise
too.
