Hi Tom,

We've been doing PSK 31 quite a bit. Our latest accomplishment is copying a
Russian Station on the Kamchatka Peninsula WITHOUT AN ANTENNA! Actually we
had about 10 feet of probably RF-leaky coax to an antenna switch, and when
we turned the switch to a grounded port that was not connected to an
antenna, we could still copy the Russian station.. amazing...

Dr. Gabrielson, Penn State U.:

Wow! All of this excitement has inspired me to upgrade my license. (I
have a Technician license -- I took that test when I was starting to
work on some 1 GHz acoustic imaging transducers. I've always kept a
small library of ARRL pubs for reference especially for MHz and GHz
circuit construction and I decided I was free-loading long enough. I
haven't used the license, though.)
There's a testing session on campus late in Feb that I plan to attend.
I recently ordered a 20-meter PSK31 transceiver kit from Small Wonder
Labs ($100) and assembled the receiver section. So far I can only
listen but with a pretty crude indoor antenna, I've picked up
transmissions from Italy, Argentina, and Spain. If I pass elements
1 and 3, I'll add the transmitter section and try it out.

Tom
