The TGC-1 was originally designed by the Postal Telegraph Co and then continued by WU after they took over Postal.

We have one preliminary manual and all the drawings are WU.

The unit was originally referred to as a "Package Set", probably because it was the first time reperfs and tape readers were packaged in the same cabinet.

RCA was using them on their RTTY circuits in the late 1940s, though they were using them in a dual-cabinet configuration.

someone was asking recently who made the TGC-1, whether it wa
W.U. or Postal or somebody else.  I know the machines were Teletype
but don't remember who built the sets.

TGC-1 was especially a military torn tape item.  Since each cabinet
handled one or two lines send and receive it made it easy to set up
a relay center of any size.  Whereas the fixed stations preferred
a sending aisle and a receiving aisle and a routing clerk in between.
That's where you see those MXD machines with up to ten or so tape
readers.
