OK now this is kind of embarrassing: my program and setup was completely fine. One of the type bar carriage actuating arms was not adjusted correctly and typing incorrect bits half the time, leading to my problem. Once I fixed it, my program worked flawlessly in its original pre-debugging state. Thank you all for your help though, it helped me check my codes parameters!

The five unit code is composed of five selecting impulses which may be either MARKING (current) or SPACING (no-current) according to the code sequence of the character to be transmitted. Each group of five selecting impulses is preceded by a start impulse (no-current) and followed by a stop impulse (current) which are used to maintain synchronism between the transmitting and receiving apparatus.
