I might be a little late to this conversation, but I would like to quote from the manual:
The five unit code is composed of five selecting impulses which may be either MARKING (current) or SPACING (no-current) according to the code sequence of the character to be transmitted. Each group of five selecting impulses is preceded by a start impulse (no-current) and followed by a stop impulse (current) which are used to maintain synchronism between the transmitting and receiving apparatus.
