The simple way amateurs did in Germany back in the old RTTY days was to count the printed
characters in 10 seconds.
60 characters (almost one line) = 45 baud
67 characters (one line) = 50 baud

Hit one letter key and then repeat key (if available).

I have done a lot of fiddling with Creed machines with governed motors
and found that a small optical tacho such as this:-
