Pardon my confusion, but I am trying to understand.
The difference between 28KSR and 28RO is 3" front-to-back

Do you have a KSR in a floor-mount cabinet, and you want to turn it into a RO in the same floor-mount cabinet?
IF SO - It seems like you have two choices
1) find an RO base (chassis) and move your motor and typing unit to it and install it in the floor-mount cabinet
2) pull the keyboard parts off your KSR base (chassis) and put it back in the floor-mount cabinet.
In either case you'd need a new 153117 RO front cover (plastic shroud) which will save you the 3" on the front.

The footprint is not a problem, and a compact would need some sort of stand. Others have responded with advice, and if I can find an RO base and cover, that is all I would need.  Those items would also be less expensive to buy and ship.

To save space have you considered a M28RO compact?

I am learning what to ask for. I am starting to believe I need an RO base with the plastic front piece that is much smaller than a KSR. I get the impression if I can find an RO base all I would need to do is remove the KSR base with all of the keyboard and transmitting parts, install the RO base, and move the typer, motor and speed gears to the RO base. This conversion would be considered a downgrade, but space is critical and I need  RO only in this case.

While I guess it could be converted, wouldn't you really want an RO base? OR in the case of one of the 28s I got, it has a cover that fits over the keyboard.

I just looked at a RO and KSR chassis (sorry, no extra RO).
I think you would just need to remove the keys/keylevers except for local CR and local LF.
Maybe need to remove the keyboard code bars, transmitter, etc, but probably not.
A new RO front cover seems like it would align the CR and LF keys properly.
Paul Cembura probably has RO front cover (153117) and chassis (152000) - better check those part numbers!
YMMV. No Warranty.

I want to convert a 28 KSR to RO. Aside from the much smaller plastic part on the front, what else would I need? Would it be easier if I searched for the entire chassis and front from an RO? Does anyone have one to spare?
