Thanks for pointing out the procedures. I had seen that page but not read it thoroughly. So yes, my machine is currently "running open". The good news is that I pretty much went through the steps mentioned, including keeping the selector magnet closed manually. I do need to try the "pins 7 and 8" step in line mode.

Separately, I did try swapping Q1 between the two boards I have, and it doesn't improve the situation. So both transistors might be good and the issue might be somewhere else.

Its normal for the big resistor to be "toasty".  Thats why the metal heat sync is over it.

I just hope you troubleshoot properly to get to the reason the machine is running open.  There is a procedure on the wiki site that Jeff Albrecht kindly set up for us.

Also, every time we use a new vinyl hammer would should remember that Dave Tumey had those made at considerable cost to him.
