At the risk of beating a dead horse.

It would appear to me that the Line Feed Push Bar is supposed to drop down to its stop at the end of each cycle.  That doesn't seem to be happening fully and the Function Bail manages catch it each cycle.  I think that the accurate print excuses the LF Function Bar from being an issue.  If it didn't retract it would interfere with the printing ... unless there's enough loose tolerance to allow it to clear the Vanes, but not let the LF Push Bar end to drop enough to the clear the Function Bail. 

One thing that I don't understand is what ensures that the complete LF linkage returns to its resting position after moving the platen.one line up.  I'd have thought there to be a spring somewhere, but I don't see if on figure 21.

Keep in mind, we're dealing with MECHANICS with these 
monsters ... not electronics!   we can SEE how the mechanics 
work, and we can run them in slow motion. 

Have you turned off the motor, connected the kbd and the 
selector magnet in a local look, turn the motor (in the 
proper direction), press a key on the keyboard, keep turning
the motor and WATCH the mechanics ... you should see the 
selector magnet select the 5 codes of the key you pressed;

that snaps the platen to the next 'notch' for the next line. 

SOMETHING releases that lever ... you need to keep 
sending characters from the keyboard and turning the 
motor by hand until you can SEE what is tripping that 
LF lever ...  then look for the adjustment related to that 
lever and ratchet pawl.  It's all mechanical and adjustable. 

I just read Wayne's response to you, with the very nice 
graphic drawings ... but I'm going to send my response 
anyway just to reinforce his suggestions !!
