Thanks fellas, we were working on the WWII radio room today and debated if we should have some 15/19 in there.

Nick Ill shoot you those part numbers soon too, life just keeps getting in the way during the week. I need to get #2 back up.

Been doing a ton of demos in message handling and the "mini me" has been getting a workout with the RTTY contests. I just tune someone in and let it print CQs, come out a minute later and theres a crowd of people taking vids of it. Really really need to get it working for sending but that would take some miracles.

The AGC class command ships for amphibious assaults definitely had M15 gear aboard.

Jeff,

I don't know about #2, but for #1, Navy ships during WWII definitely used M15 for RTTY/RATT communications. (I'm not familiar with "Iowa Class" size or dates).

Before WWII, the US military used little or no TTY equipment (too expensive!).  But with WWII, they quickly realized the advantages of RTTY/RATT. Enclosed is a map of the Navy TTY network of 1948.

The Navy did some experiments with RTTY in the 1920s, but I don't think they did much with them until WWII. So any ships with RTTY equipment on them before 1950, would have used M15s (and later, M19s). In 1950, M28 production started and the first year (or two) production went to the Navy.

Have fun,

Some questions and discussions from the ship today, maybe Nick or Duncan might have insight:

1. Does anyone know if an IOWA class ship had any Model 15 gear onboard when first deployed?

2. Would message handling ever send or receive personal traffic for sailors onboard from friends/family (aka telegrams) other than military orders?

The second question was from a guest.
