Using the reactance of a
condenser to lower the current in an AC circuit to an
essentially resistive load will work, and is the basis of many
older battery chargers. However, with an inductive load, the
results could be unpredictable and perhaps unstable. It would
be very unstable if the load varies.

I have read that a capacitor can be used to drop line voltagewithout dissipating heat like a resistor. I have used them tosoften the light from an incandescent bulb and increase itslife. I do not know if it will work ahead of a transformer though.
