TWX belonged to Bell.

 

Telex belonged to Western Union.

 

In about 1970 give or take a year WU brought the TWX system from Bell.  We were dispatched for the TWX service by Bell for a year and then all dispatch went to WU. 

 

Eventually WU had a service that would allow a Telex to send and receive a TWX.

 

The key thing that brought me to setting up my own TTY service was when WU started selling machines in 1973 or so.

 

Anyone could work on them.

 

WU always seemed to be a click or two behind the time but I enjoyed working there in SPFD, MA and WICH, KS.
