If you mean FLDIGI prints junk where it has no tones to demodulate, then you need to set the squelch level in FLDIGI to some higher value.  Look in the lower right area of the FLDIGI window for SQL.  That's the squelch control.  Since you are essentially "wireline", set SQL to ON (yellow light on my Raspberry Pi) and the vertical slider to the right of the SQL button to mid scale and see if that helps.

GKs,

I added some mark signal to the start of my characters and that helps but FLDIGI/MMTTY
still want to print garbage during the silence.
Only way to make them happy is send a continuous mark frequency.

Well OK I guess that is the answer then.

In case anyone is wondering. I'm doing this to test the virtual AFSK keyboard I talked about implementing
in HTML, CSS, Javascript.
I'm not a web developer by any stretch of the imagination just tinkering for fun.

In practice, is not the ‘mark’ tone continuous?

Silent intervals in between characters might confuse FLDIGI and MTTY – I haven’t used a Flesher in decades, but it might ‘flywheel’ over interruptions like that.  (The Dovetrons do this…)  A lot of “physical” TUs use an absense of the Mark tone to turn the motor off after a timed delay – and subsequently turn it back on when the tone re-appears…

The individual bits were all created with sin(2 * P * f * t) with t starting at zero.

The characters were created by concatenating these mark and space tones. No regard given to joining tones at zero crossings.

In a music application you would want to join at zero crossings to avoid getting a pop sound.

So all bit tones start at zero phase and end when their time slot is up.

No tone between letters. Just silence, start bit, 5 data bits and a stop bit then silence.

As I said the Flesher TU170 has no problem with it.

FLDIGI and MMTTY don't like it.

When your individual files are concatenated, is the composite signal phase-continuous?

Are these individual files inserted within a stream of mark frequency?
Perhaps FLDIGI needs slight wake up time?  Query from someone who knows
nothing about FLDIGI. (but should learn)
