GFIs work by comparing the current in the live and neutral wires. An unbalance means current is going where it should not. It only takes a few milliamps difference to trip it. The noise filter condensers will often pass enough current to ground to trip the GFI. Depending upon your situation, an isolation transformer can be used or provide an outlet without GFI for station equipment. The code here is concerned with convenience outlets for small appliances and obviously portable items. Larger devices qualify as "fixed equipment" and are not required to use GFI outlets. I don't think anyone could call a model 15 or an R-390 receiver portable.

Ah: so….

Perhaps an isolation transformer of suitable wattage – a ‘travel transformer’ if an actual 2-winding device, not an auto transformer – with the shell earthed – might stop the tripping….

The motor doesn’t draw much at all – I’m not in my shop just now or I could look it up.

And IIRC there are gear sets for the 15 for 50/60 Htz….

I think Bambi is down under. Not sure what power grid they use.

So would a synchronous motor be the correct RPM on Ausie power?

Is the motor series-governed or synchronous?

And it could be the bypass capacitors themselves that are ‘leaky’ enough to trip a GFI.

Both style motors are fairly plentiful, and are easy to install. Might be better to try and find the whole assembly intact, rather than cowboy a ‘foreign’ motor into a Mod 15.

Further – at this juncture, you may wish to consider just replacing the motor with a ‘synchronous’ unit – this removes a layer of complexity and things that will eventually fail (brushes, governor parts, rubber tires and discs, resistors, etc.)

Unless you are doing a “100 point” restoration that is. Otherwise, a sync motor is a lot less hassle in the long run.

Just my 200 millidollars….

The motor on the Model 15 I am restoring trips the Ground Fault breaker even after replacing the filter capacitors, so I am looking sadly to replace it. Would a member know where the specs for this 1/25 HP motor including torque could be found?
