Yes the line will be closed by a switch with the typing unit removed. (probably also with keyboard out too?)
There are other WD that may show connections
without the line relay modification. Last 15 I worked on did
have it.

Is there a schematic that shows where all these wire terminals go to?There are 3 terminal blocks next to the power switch with about 6 lugs on each block.The lugs I thought go to the selector magnets are shorted together. Maybe a leaf switch is doing that becausethe typing unit is not on the base and so it is by passed? (just a wild guess)Also wondering if those 3 big wire wound resistors on the line relay box could be used and how they are connected to the terminal blocks.Looks like there is a socket for a line relay but none present.
