  Thanks! After I sent my question I took a meter and verified the leaf switch under the printer was in fact what was shorting to wires to the selector magnets so that mystery is solved.

Yes the line will be closed by a switch with the typing unit removed.  (probably also with keyboard out too?)

There are other WD that may show connections without the line relay modification.  Last 15 I worked on did have it.

There are 3 terminal blocks next to the power switch with about 6 lugs on each block.
The lugs I thought go to the selector magnets are shorted together. Maybe a leaf switch is doing that because

Also wondering if those 3 big wire wound resistors on the line relay box could be used and how they are connected to the terminal blocks.
Looks like there is a socket for a line relay but none present.
