That cr/lf has been a major problem for many years when the computers were used for ham rtty. The computer screens seem not to need them but most mechanical machines do need them.
The printer gets to the end of the line and just beats a hole in the paper.
That is why when I wrote a very simple rtty program for a computer years ago I set it so that after about 65 letters it would look for the next space between words and send a cr/lf and if no space then at 72 charterers it would do a hard cr/lf.

This might be obvious, but many of these teletypes don’t have automatic carriage return/line feed. So you should make sure that the source data is sending those to the printer. MMTTY might just be word-wrapping the text as it is displayed on your screen.
