When these were in use at a customer's location, how was the data stream transmitted? Was it tones, a DC loop, polar or something else?  I have seen photos of these pedestals before, and it looks like there is a shelf under the machine. Was this for a local loop DC supply or a modem? What are the start and stop buttons for?  99.9% of my experience and knowledge of teletype gear has been with RTTY or landlines in the military. I have essentially zero experience with two-way teletype communications in businesses.
