Ethan,
Your Telex machine uses a DC loop as an interface to the Telex exchange and network and not a modem.
If you are interested in activating your Telex machine on an actual and active Telex network, please look into the iTelex network:

I'm curious about the difference too. I have a Western Union-badgedModel 32 (with rotary dial) so would be curious about bypassing themodem on that. I _also_ have a Model 33 (with touch tone pad) with agiant Western Electric "Dataset" (modem) filling the pedestal but thatone just connects up to a normal POTS line. When I first got it, Iwas totally successful dialling up CompuServe and getting a loginprompt at 110 baud. The 32, though, still needs a clean and lube job since it was rescuedfrom a garden shed. It also needs the paper tape reader housingrepaired from impact damage prior to it coming into my possession (asthe story goes, the friends of the previous owner got tired of movingit from house to house and stopped being gentle with it)-ethan______________________________________________________________GreenKeys mailing listHome: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/greenkeysHelp: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htmPost: mailto:[email protected]Jordan Spencer Cunningham's GreenKeys Search Tool: https://teletype.net/gksearch
