K4NYW’s recent post about some KL equipment available really piqued my curiosity. Thanks to Duncan, I’ve been doing some research on these machines. Navy-radio.com has a catalog from 1970 and I was really blown away by the expanse of the catalog. I’ve never really known anything about these machines other than they were a competitor to teletype, got a lot of military contracts and used 7/8” tape. Not much else. On this last point, I know that paper tape has always been an issue for owners of these machines.

But as I began to look through this catalog, I kept seeing the same sentence for tape-related machines and it really got me curious, “Standard roll, 7/8-lnch with edge printing, or 11/16-inch non-printing.” And many machines had this additional sentence right after the first, “Reperforator may be readily modified for center (over feed holes) printing.”

While I didn’t do an exhaustive review, I could not find any tape-related machine in this 60-page catalog that did not mention using both 7/8 and 11/16.

So, it begs the question. Have any owners of KL equipment on this list ever made the necessary adjustments to support 11/16ths paper? If anyone has done this, it would seem to be a great benefit to the KL machine owners to publish the procedure.

And now I have a hankerin’ for a KL reperf!
