There’s probably a reason 90% of the Compacts that I have come across have a busted or missing speed change knob….I have a pair of pliers sitting near my compacts.John, if you can shift OK at the rear linkage, it is probably just a matter of designed-in mechanical disadvantage when twisting the knob/shaft.$0.02 worth from K4NYWOn Tue, Sep 26, 2023 at 3:07 PM John, W9DDD <[email protected]> wrote:Well I stood on my head and squinted and managed to find a position where I can get a screwdriver onto the second set screw (on the side). Now have both set screws as tight as I can get them.
It seems to me that it's taking too much force even if I grab the rod at the back end and wrestle it there instead at the knob. Is it possible I've missed something in the lubrication process?

Well this made me take the cover off of mine. I think my problem is that I can't get enough bite on the new knob to keep it from slipping. With the cover off and access internally I can shift all 3 speeds. The original knob would have a screw going through the hole in the shaft so no slippage problem with it.

Here's a video of shifting gears on a 28 Compact - there are very distinct sounds while running and shifting between the three speeds. Are you really shifting to the 45 baud gears?

There are 3 separate pairs of gears that get selected by the lever. So somehow you aren’t really selecting the 45.5 pair. There is no adjusting the speed except by selecting one of the pairs. I’ll take some photos.Nick

Hey all, figured Id ask here too. At the ship we have this ugc-77 (low level 28 mini) that has a selectable gearbox (45.5/50/75 baud). Despite putting it on far counter-clockwise position, its stuck at 50 baud and not 45.5. Does anyone know if I can adjust it further to get it back to 45.5?
I guess I should RTFM too.
