George Hutchison tried years ago to reason with the guy and was willing at that time to do all the work to arrange distribution. He planned to go down there to survey it. George’s idea was that someone would rent a truck and drive across country dropping off equipment for everybody. That’s a nice idea, but who’s going to do that?
And then something happened, and George never knew what. The guy pretty much handed George his hat and said some strong words. George never figured out what he did to piss the guy off. It was probably a big misunderstanding. Plus the guy wanted a lot of money. George’s effort ended after that and George said he’d never go near the place, he was out. What was this? 5 years ago? Maybe longer?
Sorry to be negative but we need to be realistic.
There was another fellow named Pete Lancashire who had a large collection in that area of the country. George was responsible for the distribution of all Pete’s teletype gear (there was a lot) from his estate. George put out notices for people to come and get it.. Few to no volunteers came to move the stuff out (I do think someone did take something. Was that you, Daniel?). George paid out his own pocket to make arrangements and took most of it to his house, hoping to give it away, and people would not even go to his house to pick it up.
Sad story. Who’s left to collect this equipment and preserve it for all time? Thank goodness the AWA museum is doing that. Thank goodness for Duncan who has set it all up there.
I always dreamed of starting a museum for this. It would serve as a place for all my Teletype equipment along with a lot of old computing equipment (some very old). So I could get it started. But I’d need a benefactor to fund it. Space is expensive. That’s the hard part.
So, after saying all that, I truly hope this turns out well.

If the equipment would fit in a self storage unit near there, perhaps
several of us could pool the rent on something until the equipment is

I got the same call. My parents live about 15 miles from him, I wish he

up there also. Now that he wants it hauled out maybe we can make
something work.

The topic of the 2020 email threads talking about a warehouse full of
radio and TTY equipment has reawakened. David Mercado (owner) called me
today to inquire if I was "still interested" in the lot. He states he
still has 90% of what was advertised back the first time around and
wants to know if anyone is interested in hauling it away. He stated
the next stop is the scrap yard so perhaps he's more receptive to
mocving stuff. There was extensive discussion here on GK about this
back in March 2020 but it apparently came to naught. It has apparently
been picked over by locals for the radio stuff but most of the TTY stuff
is supposedly still there. I pointed him at Greenkeys (again) and he
seemed inclined to post a msg here. I have his email if anyone would
care to go direct and discuss it.
