A big thank you to those who replied, Ron Boltz MR Ratt Rig sent me a picture followed up by a call to walk me through on how to fix it.  The metal plate between the magnet and set screw needed a nudge, a fingernail nudge is all it took and it came alive.  The meat grinder noise was a pair of flat facing gears under the Ma change switch that were just barely touching, once the magnet came alive they separated and when you type they engage.  A new ribbon and a fresh roll of tape and I think we are in business.
