I recently acquired a Teletype Model 33 ASR as an estate sale, hoping to restore this unit for use with my Altair 8800 (clone).  Is anyone reading this located in central Minnesota who could offer some guidance to a rookie or share their restoration do’s/don’ts?

Start with a range test: punch a tape with the "U*" characters, and Scotch-tape it into a loop, then run it in local mode while you move the range selector from one end to the other. If you get 80 or more points of range (e.g., from 22 to 102) without errors, then the tape reader, and the printer, are performing properly.

After that, try all the control functions: Carriage Return, Line Feed, Bell, Tape On, Tape Off, etc.

Make a list of exceptions and report back. Good luck!
