Ken, Tim et al,

I was going to ask if it looked like to regular TDs, or one of them was a climber.  It will make a difference on the wiring.  The common two head would be LXD single contact TDs.  Unless one's a LX  (or maybe all doubles are 1 LXD and 1 LX, might be some logic to that?).

The climber would be an LCXD and you can only use one at a time since they share the same distrubutor.  (I wonder if they ever made a version with an LD mounted on the LCXB so you could use them independently?)

Then for various ides on ASR wiring,

FAA: https://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/28ASR-FAA-IMD-D-439.pdf

You can ignore the right hand side pretty much and there are a couple of extra features on the left as well.

WU: https://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/wd/wu9797wd.pdf

You most likely don't have that one, but if you ignore terminal numbers in many cases, it's another way to illustration how things work.

WE: (Western Electric, Teletype's parent) https://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/wd/w0700-6105.pdf

Navy: https://www.navy-radio.com/tty/asr/ugc6-schem-01.pdf

It is helpful when looking for documentation to have all the name plate data you can find.

Unfortunately you will find Teletype model numbers, Bell System numbers or JAN (military) numbers on the equipment.  Later military manuals seem to have Teletype number in them.

Teletype models for 28 and 35 equipment are like LP9 for printer, LK21 for keyboard, and LMU3 for motor unit.

Bell Systen uses number like 28B printer, 28B keyboard  28E cabinet.  28x is useless without a word description to go with it. (I really don't like their system)

There are various charts that will reference you back to the Teletype number (or the other way around depending on what documents you have) from Bell or military numbers.

BSPs will have either Bell System numbers or Teletype model numbers or sometimes only a word description for a title.

Bulletins are AFAIK are all strictly Teletype documents.  (Maybe not?  I now recall seeing Bell numbers in some)

Personally I prefer BSPs, only because I was brought up on them years ago.  You really need to try all varieties to work out puzzles at times. Fortunately they all use Teletype part numbers, although you'll see if you were a Bell System employee you'd add TP as a prefix.  Military makes you work for it with all their tables and references back and forth.  Later ones seem better.  Teletype and Bell put the P/N right on illustrations in the parts sections.  Earlier military manuals used their own reference numbers that then had to go to the tables to find the real number.

Ken -

Are the dual TDs LXDs? I had a 28 ASR with what appeared to be LXDs however one of them was an LX - parallel output. This was a special system for the Air Force I was told and the LX was supposed to feed a computer. Also, the machine was all 100 wpm and there were no 60 wpm gears for the TD arrangement.

Subject: [GreenKeys] asr dual TDs

I am watching this subject with interest as I have a 28asr that had a
spider web of non original loose wires inside that I removed. The
original wiring to the
terminal strips is in good shape. This asr has what looks to be
factory dual TDs. I am thinking I will series them but do not know how
the original wiring was connected but maybe someone here can enlighten me.

As Eugene says, all the connections are on the terminal strips
connected so you can do whatever you want. But standard usage for all
the Navy M28 KSRs and ASRs that I have seen so far have a single loop
connection with keyboard and printer in series (also TD in the ASR).
Maybe because you wanted to also print what you were sending? But
what do I know.....
nota bene - the 28ASR K-KT-T switch would let you cut a tape locally
while printing from elsewhere.
