I'm new to the list but not
to RTTY. I've got a model 14 (because I like mechanical things
- OK?)
Everyone on GreenKeys likes "mechanical things" !!
The MITE (Miniaturized Integrated Telegraph Equipment) was
originally developed with help from Western Union as a lower cost
choice for WU. But apparently they could not get the cost down to
commercial levels and turned to the military. The MITEs were used
by the military as a compact TTY unit in Jeeps, armored personnel
carriers and planes. There was a version in a waterproof, fiberglass
case, the AN/TGC-14 that was used by US Marines & Army special
forces. There was also an "ASR" (page printer & tape) version,
the AN/TGC-29. The company (originally the Teleprinter Corp. ) only
stayed in business for less than 10 years (c1957-c1966).
We have a couple at the Antique Wireless Assoc. Museum and I have
had them running. But, if anything goes wrong, they are very hard to
work on, being so compact. One unit had a low-level current mode.
Rather than the typical 20 or 60 ma loop, it would run on 1-5 ma
loop. You could operate it off the serial port of a computer.
