I recently happened to read (I forget which 28 manual) that  the hexagonal shape of the paper spindle is important to cause the paper guide to function properly  ( The thin rod that just fits the paper width moves sideways in the proper direction to straighten the paper each time the hexagonal paper holder provides some back tension as it turns.

That being said, a length of plastic pipe works for me.
