Haven’t looked at a full chad regular M28 ROTR, but the mini-ROTR uses the motor to suck chad into a cloth bag. Probably the full chad regular ROTR has something similar.

Wow. You really did figure it out! Impressive. I can’t imagine how many pdfs you had to go through to figure it out. My reperf does have a vertical lever that feeds out tape. I seem to be missing a guide and a linkage between the external lever and the internal lever. At least now I know what its intended purpose was, whether or not I can find the parts to complete it! Right now I am waiting for the arrival of a new reperf from Mr,. RTTY. This one will be a full chad reperf. I’ve always wanted a full chad tape unit. Afterall, how can I make Christmas tree decorations with a hanging chad reperf!  So I’ll have to see if the one from Paul has that feedout lever or not.

I will have to figure out a chad box but I’ll wait to see what the whole thing looks like and what space I will (or wont) have under the reperf in the rotr enclosure. Probably not much space at all.

Thank you, Nick!

AHA! EUREKA! ETC.

This handle and arm are part of modification kit 174457 (maybe see 5889S which I don't have).

50151S alludes to this -

"The 195271 Modification Kit provides a replacement tape guide for the 159953 Tape Guide on LRC200 Covers when the 174457 Modification Kit is not desired. (The 174457 Modification Kit provides facilities for external manual tape feed-out for self-contained Model 28 Typing Reperforators and includes a replacement tape guide)."

So there are three tape guides for the ROTR cabinet.

159953 - original - no handle

177404 - used with the 177405 handle via 177457 modification (like Eugene's photo)

195181 - replaces 159953 - looks like 177404, but mounts with adhesive

EUREKA! After following these clues I eventually found the 573-118-700 adjustment procedure (page 133 of issue 8) that shows this handle and arm - it evidently bears against the manual LTRS feed-out lever inside the cabinet. If your reperf doesn't have that internal manual feed-out lever modification, there's nothing for the external handle to actuate and you will be properly mystified as to what the heck it does.

It is shown in the parts section, but not shown in some pictures.
Section 573-135-800 is the only place see a reference to those parts. I haven't checked Navy manuals, sometimes they show stuff not in the Teletype or Bell Systems documents.

I like the suggestion of it being to flip the tape end back up.

Looks to me to be added and based on where its located it might be used to push the tape back up if its torn off and then starts down inside the cover.  Just My thoughts.

Anyone know what the purpose of this little external lever is on the ROTR? Doesn’t connect to anything. I thought maybe it was supposed to connect to the SPACING lever but I can’t see how that would make sense.
