eBay delivered my new (very old stock) Motorola fuses this afternoon - popped one in, and hey presto we are back on i-Telex! 

Thank you for the suggestions and ideas: the one that did the trick was the very easy relay contact clean-up as advised by Wayne.

Attached is pic of 33 with "dog bone" motor and you can see it has no starting cap.  

Perhaps I was looking at another 32/33 you own when I saw the cast motor and you have the stamped frame motor.
