Just feed the paper in from the top side of the platen, problem solved!

Surely that needs a spring but there's no place to hook said spring. Finally figure out that the 153242 bracket has the spring mount broken off. No replacements here, so I fashion a spring mount and hook up a spring.
I remounted the printer to the base and now it line feeds perfectly every time - but they are all in reverse!
Back to the drawing board......
