I can attest to how messy it can be to work on Teletypes. What did professional maintanance people wear or do about the inevitable schmutz? I worked for 33 years in the elevator craft. Our work included escalators, and they are undoubtably one of the greasiest and nasty things to work on. When we would do major repairs, we would go to the Salvation Army store or equal and buy whatever clothing  was cheapest and fit us. After the work was finished, the shop people would rip it all up and use it for wiping rags.

Paul,
Isn't that cleaning the innards of teletypes in general?? LOL!!
Anytime I mess with the insides of a machine I get ink or gunk on me!! ;-)
The wife will alway say "Don't wear a good shirt!!!!" if I'm headed
out to the workshop!

Experience with typewriters suggests a stiff toothbrush works very well for cleaning the type. It will prevent clogging and not damage the type. I rather think
A metal brush, even soft brass, will. If type is clogged a wooden toothpick will fix it.
Acetone attacks many plastics , not good for typewriters. A better solvent is Naphtha. I have had consistently good results with Ronsonol. The solvent can be applied to the type bar hinges with an "acid" brush or an artist's bristle brush. Note that a M 15 mechanism is very similar to an Underwood Standard typerwriter so similar cleaning and care should work for both.

I would not use a "wire brush" heavy nylon brush and acetone is my
recommendation.
That will clean any ink build up.

Speaking of ribbon reinking, my

of the ribbon assembly with a hole

this is for some sort of reinking

this? It might be something nice to
have. Then I just need something that
automatically cleans the type...
yes, there was an adapter assembly with a
round felt spool which the ribbon ran across;
the felt was inked, and the ink would soak into
the ribbon as it passed over the felt. Probably
not quite as messy as Tom's procedure!

As for cleaning the type, get a brass wire brush
from Harbor Freight ... slip an old cloth under the
typebars (to catch the lint) and the you can 'scrub'
the type pallets with the brass brush.

Thanks! Does anyone have part numbers for that reinking wheel assembly?
Maybe I can get one from Mr. RTTY.

I clean the type fairly often with a brass wire brush, but the type gets
clogged up pretty quickly making it hard to tell some characters apart.

Thanks!
