I learned something new today:
The integer sizes can be converted to the actual diameter by using the formula 0.060 + (0.013 × number). For example, a #4 screw is 0.060 + (0.013 × 4) = 0.060 + 0.052 = 0.112 inches in diameter.

 Ah yes, the numbered sizes 0 through 12 (I think that's the biggest)  Perhaps related to wire and sheet metal gauges?  And the thickness isn't independent of the metal involved either.  Maybe we're stuck with it because after you go to all the trouble to memorize it all you're reluctant to give it up.
