I also have an original W.U. Model 32 Telex machine that I use on i-Telex.  I did the mod change the loop current.  I leave it on 24/7 most of the time.  The outside top of the cover gets noticeably warm to the touch but I have never done anything to try to cool it down.  The board also looks a little "toasty" like yours.  It all seems good.
