It has always mystified me that, in an ASR, the backspace solenoid wiring is soldered in and you have to cut the wiring or unsolder in order to remove the perf/reperf from the LAK base. 

Everything else in Teletype-land has plug-in or terminal strip connections…..

You are likely correct that the switch is either blank or figures tape feed out since that would be more useful particularly for auxiliary mounted reperf.
