Jim you might have hit the nail on the head there. I disables the bell in the character map table of the tty usb interface by reprogramming it to null from 07 and I have S's galore now.
And advice on the bunching up of characters on the left margin but not the right?

your shift-S is probably the bell, and printing is suppressed on the bell in many systems.
though usually they suppress spacing in that case also.
since it is spacing, might also be a problem with the S pallet ...
