After you R&R the stuntbox, you'll see that's it's really no big deal

Subject: Re: [GreenKeys] Model 28 Lubrication Questions

OK.  So, I'm feeling a little braver at this point (or more foolish) about removing the stunt box.

I've now read the Irv Hoff article from the May 1970 RTTY Journal, "Modifying the Model 28 Teletype, Part 4 the Stunt Box".  I have a sprocket feed rather than roll feed, so what I see in the back is a little different than what Irv describes.

Below is a photo of the back of my typing unit.  From my understanding, the first thing I should do is remove the three tie-ups (marked "A") that I previously added to disable goofy functions of my particular stunt box, so that items don't fly out of these slots when the stunt box is removed.

Second, I need to disconnect the arm shown at B so that the stunt box can come out when the screws are removed (is this correct??).

Then remove the screws at "C" (are these the right screws???) to release the stunt box.

With the "C" screws out the stunt box will pop backward a bit due to spring tension, and then as I manually pull it back further (and out) I will need to mind the attached cable at D.

Does this sound correct?  Are there any other gotchas I should be on the lookout for?  Any other steps I have missed?

thanks,

Paul - ad7i

Paul, if I remember just take out the 2 mounting screws from the stuntbox rear brackets and it just pulls out....

Greetings GreenKeyers --

I'm doing my annual lubrication of my beloved Model 28 RO, and now I'm beginning to think that I've been omitting (not lubricating) a key part of the unit since it was given to me.  I'm following the instructions in this manual:  https://www.navy-radio.com/manuals/tty/jh/ttyman7/TeletypeManuals/model28/573-115-701TC-Iss3.pdf

When I get to page 6 and section 2.06, the Codebar Mechanism, I can see in the pictorial at the top of Page 6 that I'm looking horizontally, into the front of the typing unit (code bars on right side).  But when I look at the line drawing of the codebar mechanism at the bottom of page 6 I'm a bit disoriented.  Am I looking at the line drawing also horizontally into the front of the typing unit?  Or is the line drawing a top-down view (plan view)?  Either way, where are the two O2 oil points on the left side of the 2.06 line drawing?  Are they buried inside the typing unit and if so, how do I get at them?

And another question, using the photo below rather than Teletype manuals, should I be lubricating the area in red?  Is that the back side of the code bars?  If I should be lubricating those, do I need to remove the stunt box to do that?  I'm very reluctant to try to remove the stunt box because that seems pretty scary.   I don't want to end up with a 5 gallon bucket full of TTY parts.  I have been lubricating the area in yellow because I can reach it,, but does the area in yellow need lubrication?

thanks,

Paul - ad7i
