I had always heard 72 per line and ring the bell (or light the
EOL light) at 68 so you can figure out where to put the hyphen if
the word is going to be too long.

Not sure what the standard is but my RTTY 32 can print 71 characters per line.� You can gain a bit by moving the EOL tab on the carriage belt but be careful not to go too far or you get into trouble with jamming on the right side.
