Forgot to mention if the NULL is sent after FIGS I'd never be able to print FIGS as it would go back to Cyrillic.

On the Russian machine Cyrillic (CYR) is 00000 1st shift, Latin(LAT) is 11111 2nd shift, Figs (Cipher) 11011 3rd shift.
If any of those are sent it stays in that shift level until it receives a different shift code.

Paul,

One NULL will throw it into first shift it will stay there forever until it sees either an explicit LETTERS or FIGS.
The header of every message sends BOTH so I'd have to hit the break key to throw it back to 1st shift.

Recognizing some wierd ascii character as a NULL or a character sequence would work better then it could be controlled.
Sort of how ^1 is intrepreted as UC "S"  maybe something similar? ">N" or "^N" ?

What if I temporarily modified AUTOSTART to add a blank after every figs so Joe could try out his machine? What problems might that cause? If machines have a motor stop on break, wouldn’t that be a problem? What else?

Assuming the risks are low, we could try it. Might there be some way in the transmission where I could sense that Joe wants the FIGS-BLANK and only do it for that transmission? Maybe something in a header?

Joe,

You could send a null (blank) from another machine and then copy text, but as soon as you received a LTRS, it would shift back to 2nd level.  if you don't have another machine, just try to interrupt the loop quickly; you may be able to manually create a Blank.

Sounds like you need a software converter to change LTRS to BLANK.

What kid of machine is it??

What alphabet is used in the 1st level??

We have an East German, RFT T 63 at the AWA Museum that is three level.  It types in Cyrillic on receipt of the Blank character.

have fun,

Is there a way to make autostart throw a null before a character?
I have a machine that I want to test on autostart and it has 3 shift levels.
The null is required for the first level, Letters is 2nd level and Figs is 3rd Level.

It does run fine in 2nd and 3rd level just wanted to see if I could send text and make it print on the first level via autostart.
