Selective calling. It also uses the zero code bar. I can never remember the names of the conditions. But basically receiving the CDC code can put you in print. Zero code bar then can be positioned to blind the printer to any future CDCs. Then at the end of the message you get a code that puts you into non-print, suppressed and back into being able to decoded CDCs.
I have printers with the solenoid and without. In all cases the little arm is down into the slot. I think the solenoid to allow monitoring the line irregardless of stunt box codes.
There's 3 or 4 docs about the stunt box that goes into all the nuances. With 42 slots the combinations are endless (almost, you have to use some of them to do things like CR, LF, and FIGS-LTRS shift)

I recently unearthed a 28 typing unit with a solenoid on the left end for print suppression. Not something I had run across before.Having never paid any attention to the SUPP code bar, I took a look at some other units and found the following other variants---SUP code bar pulled to left by spring tensionSUP code bar pinned to right (by small lever fitting into code bar notches)SUP code bar with linkage for solenoid but pinned to right (by small lever fitting into code bar notch)
The spring unit types OK no matter if is left or right…hmmm.???
So what’s the story on the suppression solenoid - what was it used for?
